Amharic has been introduced to Ethiopian films as they modernize in the 2000s, but because copyright violations and piracy are so common with home video and DVD distribution, they have been hindered. As a result of government involvement and the implementation of policies, this diminished in the early 2010s. Despite recent advancements, Ethiopian film production has remained unprofessional and of low quality in contrast to international premieres. Before the 1990s, hardly many people were familiar with top foreign box office performers. Among the most well-known individuals who contributed to Ethiopian movies’ international success are Haile Gerima, Salem Mekuria, Yemane Demissie, and Teshome Gabriel. Amharic usage in Ethiopian movies significantly risen in the 2000s. However, due to the growing use of DVDs, many directors were concerned about piracy.
