Peaceful Protest Underway at Mekelle City Administration Office Over Leadership Dispute

A peaceful demonstration is currently taking place near the Mekelle City Administration Office, where protestors are calling for the implementation of the Tigray Interim Administration’s appointment of the city’s mayor. The situation has drawn attention to the fact that Mekelle currently has two appointed mayors – one by the Interim Administration and another by the Debretsion group.

During the protest, participants raised several concerns, emphasizing that it’s inappropriate for the city to remain without a functioning mayor for months. The demonstrators strongly support the decisions made by the Tigray Interim Administration while opposing any attempts to divide their community. They’ve also voiced their stance against activities aimed at overthrowing the government, declaring that Mekelle should be known as a city of peace and development rather than chaos and rebellion.

Although long-standing questions about good governance, peace, and security have persisted in the Tigray region due to differences among top TPLF leaders, similar protests were previously prohibited following the Regional Security Bureau’s decision to ban both supporting and opposing demonstrations. However, this protest began early morning on Tahsas 23, with young participants stating they won’t leave until their demands are met.
