Outside of monasteries, and to be honest, I don’t think it’s often seen inside of them either, this gift of the Holy Spirit is uncommon.
People who believe they have the ability to develop pretest run the risk of doing something really bad for their souls.
Prelest is the belief that one is spiritually much more mature than they actually are.
The common attitude I have observed about this gift of the Holy Spirit is that if someone feels they have a prophecy, they would only discuss it in secret with their Spiritual Father and would obediently accept their direction for how to proceed.
